With the new Open Standard Module™ (OSM) standard, modules are soldered directly onto a carrier board during assembly. This saves costs for connectors, simplifies assembly for large series, provides a fixed connection between board and SOM module, and ensures permanent assignment of the module to the carrier board. With a module size from 15 x 30 millimeters, OSM modules are ideal especially when the design offers particularly limited space.
With “Open Standard Module™” (OSM), the Standardization Group for Embedded Technologies (SGET) has specified a solderable and automatically processable System on Module (SOM) – and created new possibilities for modular COM carrier designs.
Open Standard Module™ at Aaronn Electronic
Aaronn Electronic now offers its customers OSM modules as well as the support with selection, conception, design, development and integration that they are already well accustomed to with COM modules. With this, the system integrator from Puchheim is further expanding its product portfolio in a targeted manner. With OSM, the company is expanding into a new and very promising area: Managing Director Florian Haidn sees opportunities above all in the numerous IoT projects that his customers have in the pipeline. There are many reasons for this:
With “Open Standard Module™” (OSM), the Standardization Group for Embedded Technologies (SGET) has specified a solderable and automatically processable System on Module (SOM). OSM is an important progress for modular COM carrier designs. The specification not only refers to particularly small modules (from 30 x 15 to 45 x 45 millimeters), but also makes low-power and ultra-low-power processors from different manufacturers available with a standardized format.
OSM thus meets the rapidly increasing demand for applications of embedded systems in IoT concepts. The openness of the operating system, the provision of the necessary drivers and board support packages, and the open source approach to hardware and software make OSM particularly interesting for developers.
Soldered directly onto a carrier board during assembly
OSM modules are soldered directly onto a carrier board during assembly, which makes them particularly robust, enables automatic assembly by pick-and-place machines and allows the module to be clearly assigned to the carrier board.
The OSM specification differs from other COM specifications by the fixed connection: The SOM module is soldered directly to the board. This ensures a high level of robustness, enables automated assembly by pick-and-place machines and the unique assignment of the module to the carrier board, which is desired in certain areas.
OSM modules are available in two heights. In addition to the flat version, there is also an extended height version available. It offers space for additional components due to cutouts in the bottom. The power supply is 3.3 or 5 volts.
“The OSM standard allows easy and affordable development of embedded applications with individual board design, reduces design risk and time-to-market,” summarizes Martin Schiller, Channel Sales Manager at Kontron Electronics. In addition, Schiller adds another very practical advantage of OSM modules: “Connectors that are not needed don’t cost money and don’t cause problems in procurement.”
The SOM Kontron OSM-S i.MX8M Mini
The SOM Kontron OSM-S i.MX8M Mini with the form factor “Size S” (30 x 30 millimeters) is also available with support and consulting via Aaronn Electronic.
Kontron has launched the SOM OSM-S i.MX8M Mini , a first product with the “Size S” form factor (30 x 30 millimeters), which is distributed via Aaronn Electronic. The OSM-S i.MX8M Mini offers 1 GByte RAM and 8 GByte eMMC in the minimum configuration. Up to 4 GByte RAM and up to 64 GByte eMMC memory are possible. Ethernet, USB, I/O, LCD interface and a camera interface are available. Power is supplied via a 5V DC connector, and the operating range is between -25°C and +85°C.
Kontron has initially defined three standard types for the market launch, however, own variants are possible. According to Schiller, an important aspect is traceability, which is given by the fact that the board and module are immediately firmly connected. This is important for medical devices or measuring instruments, for example.
Kontron offers a development kit consisting of a board, cable, power supply unit and display controller to make it easier to start working with OSM. For software development, Kontron offers Embedded Linux (Yocto Distribution), Board Support Packages (BSPs) and demo images. The experts from Aaronn Electronic will provide support for the design-in.
